(The healing properties of common mallow)

Malva sylvestris, also known as cheeses, common mallow, high mallow and tall mallow, is plant native to South Africa and the east of the Mediterranean. Mallow is a plant growing freely in meadows, hedgerows and fallow fields. Through history it was used as decoration in religious worship, as a vegetable in the kitchen, in traditional medicine and as a natural yellow dye. 


Common mallow seeds
The leaves, seeds and flowers of this plant are used in medicine usually to make essential oils, creams and ointments. The leaves and flowers can be used for tea. The seeds and leaves are also edible. 


Common mallow has Vitamins A, B, C and E, inulin, mucilage, phenols, flavonoids, essential fatty acids, fibre, calcium, magnesium, zinc, selenium, and potassium.

Some of the benefits of common mallow are:

- Heals the skin (has anti-inflammatory and pain relieving properties and is used for wounds, skin rashes, insect bites, eczema, acne and swelling).

- Has anti- aging effects (reduces wrinkles).


- Boosts immunity (helps with prevention of bacterial infections).

- Promotes sleep (mallow tea can relax the body and brain).


- Treats respiratory problems (cough, asthma, bronchitis, throat infections, hoarseness, catarrh and emphysema.

- Acts as a mild laxative.
