A BETTER WAY TO SLEEP
(Insomnia and lemon balm)
Lemon balm is a well known herb, a member of the mint
family that’s used both as a cooking ingredient and as an herbal medicine. Lemon
balm, also known as sweet mary, melissa, balm, or by its scientific name,
melissa officinalis. The leaves have a mild lemon taste and fragrance.
It’s also well known for its ability to promote better
sleep. It has been documented as far back as the Dark Ages as a means of
relieving anxiety, promoting sleep, a painkiller as well as a cure for
indigestion.
Lemon balm is a remarkable plant. Today scientific
studies show that its effects can benefit the treatment of insomnia, because it
works like a mild sedative. Lemon balm can also be used as a stomach soother to
relieve indigestion, can relieve stress and anxiety, and can improve the memory
and the mood.
In cases of insomnia the most common way to use it is to make tea. For better effect you can drink it after dinner or one hour before sleep. Use anywhere from 1/4 to three teaspoons of the dried lemon balm leaves for each cup of boiling water. You could start with a lower amount first and see how it effects you. Steep for 5 minutes, or longer if you prefer. You can drink the tea up to 4 times daily.
