ST. JOHN`S WORT AND DEPRESSION
Hypericum perforatum or
widely known as St. John`s Wort is flowering shrub native to Europe. It blooms
around the birthday of St. John the Baptist hence the name. The healing properties
of the plant come from the flowers and leaves.
The primary active
constituent in St. John`s Wort is hyperforin which is used for antidepressants.
That is why this plant is usually used to treat mild depression.
Caution: The
plant interacts chemically with many medications and can cause serious side effects.
It is not recommended for use if you take medication. Consult your doctor
before use.
St. John`s Wort can be
also used for anxiety, sleeping problems, seasonal affective disorder (SAD),
mood flashes during menopause, poor appetite. The oil from this plant is also beneficial
for the skin.
