HOME TESTS FOR DAMAGED HAIR
(Find out if you hair is damaged and why)
We all love taking care of our hair, but sometimes we go overboard with our lifestyle that we do more bad than good. We`ve all been there, we did something wrong (and sometimes we don`t know exactly what) and our hair isn`t the same.
Hair damage can be caused by a number of reasons:
• Heat based styling (flat iron and blow-drying)
• Blow drying dripping wet hair
• Chemical exposure (bleaching, perms, hair coloring)
• Towel drying
• Over- washing
• Over- brushing
• Over- shampooing
• Unbalanced diet
Basically there are three types of hair damage:
1. Dull and unruly hair
Symptoms: Lacks shine, easily tangled, frizzy.
Cause: Over- washing, shampooing too much, not brushing before washing, lack of moisture, overuse of heat based styling.
2. Fried and fragile hair
Symptoms: Breaks easy, the ends are split.
Cause: Heat- styling often and on very high temperature, coloring too often, chemical strengtheners and perms, lack of nutrients in your body.
3. Thinning hair
Symptoms: Excessive hair fall, slow hair growth.
Cause: Pregnancy (is only temporary), lack of protein, product build up, excessive chemical treatment, excessive brushing and combing, hair extension.
There are few tests to that you can do at home to tell if your hair is damaged. And maybe, if you have damage, do something about that.
The sink test:
Healthy hair is very solid, while damaged hair absorbs liquid more quickly. For this test you are going to need only a glass of water. Pluck out hair strands from the front, back and sides of you head. Drop the hairs in the water. If they float, your hair is healthy. If they sink your hair is damaged.
The follicle test:
To perform this test, pluck out one hair strand from your hair. Make sure your root comes out. Examine the root end, if it has a bulb shape than your hair is healthy, if there is no bulb than your hair is damaged.
The porosity test:
Take a very small section of your hair; spray that section with a little water. If the water sits for several minutes then is absorbed you have normal porosity hair. If the water sits on the top of your hair or beads up you have low porosity. If your hair absorbs the water quickly you have high porosity hair.
